Brown sugar is not the same as cane sugar, if you want to compare it to one, it could be a pair of granulated sugar.
It is made from sugar beet in the same way, differing from its white counterpart only in that it undergoes less chemical processing or is mixed with molasses syrup and then dried again.
Molasses is a by-product of the production of granulated sugar and is often added to brown sugar.
